Bergkamp set for Arsenal statue

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 | 8:32 AM

Dennis Bergkamp is set to become the next Arsenal legend to be honoured with a statue outside the Emirates Stadium.

Bergkamp will join the statues of Thierry Henry, Tony Adams and Herbert Chapman, who were all erected in December 2011.

There has been no official announcement from Arsenal as of yet that the Dutchman is next in line to be immortalised, but images of the statue have leaked onto Twitter. The statue depicts Bergkamp controlling the ball in mid-air against Newcastle in 2003.

The Gunners have, however, hinted that a new statue may well be unveiled in the near future.

"We're pleased that speculation surrounding a future possible statue at Emirates Stadium is generating interest and will obviously communicate details if and when there is confirmation of any new developments," an Arsenal spokesman said.

The Gunners appear to be listening to the opinion of their fans after the former Netherlands international came first in a vote conducted by the Arsenal Supporters' Trust to decide which club legend should get his own statue next.

Bergkamp, who was part of the 'Invincible' team of 2003-4, was voted second behind Henry by Arsenal fans in a poll of the club's all-time greatest players. The forward made over 400 appearances for the Gunners from 1995 to 2006 and scored 120 goals.

He is currently assistant manager at Ajax but one of the leading candidates to replace Liam Brady as Arsenal's academy director next year.
