Champions League gave Juve first half profit

Written By Unknown on Thursday, February 28, 2013 | 10:01 AM

Juventus, set for a place in the last eight of the Champions League, made a profit of 11.3 million euros ($14.81 million) in the six months to the end of December, having lost 34.6 million euros in the same period a year earlier.

Juventus have been revitalised by a move into their own new stadium. That is a rarity in Italy where big clubs often play in shared grounds owned by local authorities, limiting their ability to build money-spinning corporate boxes.

Revenues at the Turin-based club leapt by 75 percent to 149 million euros in the first half, helped by an additional 42.8 million of television money from the Champions League.

Juventus won the Italian league last season without losing a game to complete their recovery after the most successful club in Italian soccer history were relegated in 2006 over a bribery scandal.

The club expects to make a loss for the 2012-13 season as a whole but it would be significantly less than last year's figure of almost 50 million euros.

Juventus have paid 11.7 million euros to buy a plot of land adjacent to their new stadium from the Turin city council. They plan to build a new training and media centre on the site, along with hotels and other leisure facilities.

Top European clubs are under pressure to get their finances in order to comply with UEFA's new Financial Fair Play rules that could lead to teams being barred from European competition if the make excessive losses.

Juventus are top of the Italian league by six points ahead of Friday's match at second-placed Napoli.

They are also on course to advance in the Champions League next week after beating Celtic 3-0 in the first leg of their last-16 game in Glasgow.

Juventus maintain close ties with the Agnellis, the family who founded car maker Fiat. Their shirt sponsor is Fiat unit Jeep and they are controlled by Exor, the holding company of the Agnelli family.

Vidal: Messi is better than Maradona

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 | 8:54 AM

Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal feels that Lionel Messi is a better player than Diego Maradona was.

The former Argentina international is widely considered to be one of the game’s greatest , but Vidal feels that the Barcelona star has now surpassed his compatriot.

"I've only seen footage here and there [of Maradona], but I think Messi [is better],” Vidal told Corriere della Sera.

"For what he has done at his age of 25, is much better, at 25 years of age he has won everything [in club football]."

Messi has won five Liga titles, three Champions Leagues, two Copas del Rey and two Club World Cups in a glittering career with Barca, and is the only player to win the Ballon d’Or four times.

Maradona, meanwhile, led his country to the 1986 World Cup, and helped Napoli to two Scudetti.

Pirlo: Juventus not ready to win CL

Andrea Pirlo believes that Juventus are not yet ready to win the Champions League this term as he feels other teams have more quality than the Serie A champions.

Juve impressed in the first leg of their round of 16 tie against Celtic as they cruised to a comfortable 3-0 away win, yet Pirlo has insisted that they cannot be seen as favourites to win the competition.

"The Champions League? I don't think that we are ready to win it yet. Even though we're there now and will do our utmost. There are stronger teams than Juventus still in the competition," Pirlo told La Repubblica.

The midfielder then went on to praise Antonio Conte, and hopes that the successful coach will stay at Juventus Stadium.

"Conte is a great coach, but he will have to learn the language first if he moves abroad because communication is very important for him.

"I believe that Juventus is the best place for him, but he could work anywhere."

Pirlo also had his say on the Scudetto race, and insisted that the match against Napoli at the weekend will not be decisive.

"It will definitely be a very important match, but it will not be decisive. We are all calm and relaxed ahead of the match."

Juventus currently lead Serie A with 58 points from 26 games.

Paul Pogba targets Napoli win

Written By Unknown on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 | 4:09 AM

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba has insisted that his side are determined to win against Napoli away from home in Serie A on Friday.

The defending Italian champions will head into the encounter on the back of a 3-0 win against Siena in Turin.

"It's a contest we have to go into looking to win," he told reporters. "We need to play with ruthlessness and concentration, as we did today against Siena.

"It wasn't easy because they had played and beaten big teams like Lazio and Inter [Milan], but we went onto the pitch with the right mentality."

Juventus are currently six points clear of Napoli at the top of Serie A.

Buffon: 'Juventus can win Champions League'

Written By Unknown on Monday, February 11, 2013 | 4:56 AM

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon believes that his side can win the Champions League this season.

The Italian champions will take on Celtic in the last 16, the first leg of which will be played in Glasgow on Tuesday.

"Juventus are back at top level of European football again - and we believe this could be our year," he told the Scottish Sun.

"We showed in the two games against the current European Champions Chelsea that we should now be taken very seriously.

"We have got a squad full of quality - and there is a real determination that this will not just be our season in Italy but also in Europe."

Buffon added that Juventus are not underestimating Celtic and admits that winning in Glasgow will be difficult.

"We are taking Celtic very seriously for sure," said the 35-year-old.

"Not just in beating Barcelona, but their performance in the group stages in general showed they are a very dangerous team.

"Especially in Glasgow it will be very tough. All the Celtic supporters will be fired up - but we are normally used to playing in such atmospheres."

Juventus last won the Champions League in 1996.

Milan and Juve in talk over possible move for Balotelli

Written By Unknown on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 | 1:01 AM

Manchester City have held talks with AC Milan and Juventus about the sale of striker Mario Balotelli, but will only let him go if the Serie A clubs meet their valuation.

City value the Italian, 22, at around 24m euros (£21m) including add-ons.

Balotelli is not actively up for sale and City will not subsidise any of his salary should he leave the club.

Contrary to reports, Balotelli is with the squad that travelled to London for Tuesday's meeting with QPR.

Milan initiated talks with City over the Italy striker, and Juve subsequently made contact with the Premier League club to discuss buying Balotelli, who arrived in Manchester from Inter Milan in August 2010 for a fee in the region of £24m.

Earlier on Monday, City assistant manager David Platt had said Balotelli would not be moving to AC Milan this month.

"I don't think anything is going to happen," said Platt of a proposed January move.

"It's a shame the manager's not here. He might know more than me but as far as we are concerned I think he is still a Manchester City player.

And City manager Roberto Mancini had also insisted on Friday that the Italian, regularly linked with a return to Italy since he arrived in England in 2010, would not leave the club.

"It is not true. Mario stays. We didn't have any requests about Mario or other players," said Mancini.

The Italian also said it would be "difficult" to buy new players with so little time left in the transfer window.

"I don't know [if City will buy anyone] but we don't have enough players," he added. "We are 18 players now. We can't sell any players."

Balotelli - who has scored one league goal in 14 appearances this term - has courted controversy throughout his time in England, with the latest incident involving a training ground row with Mancini at the start of January.

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani had stated that if City were to lower their valuation then a move could be on, but Mancini insisted the Italy international remained part of his long-term plans.

"Mario has another three years on his contract," he said.

Juventus seal deal for Llorente

Written By Unknown on Thursday, January 24, 2013 | 6:48 AM

Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente has agreed to join Italian giants Juventus on a four-year contract at the end of the season.

The Spain international, whose deal with Athletic expires at the end of June, will become a Juve player on July 1.

A statement on juventus.com read: "Juventus can confirm that Spanish international striker Fernando Llorente will join the club on July 1, 2013.

"The 27-year-old has agreed terms on a four-year deal and will move to Turin when his Athletic Bilbao contract expires at the end of the current season."

In November, Llorente announced his decision to leave the club where he has spent nine seasons since graduating from the academy.

Amid reported interest from a host of Barclays Premier League clubs including Tottenham, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea, Serie A champions Juventus publicly entered talks with Llorente at the start of January.

Llorente has made 334 appearances for Athletic, scoring 104 goals in all competitions, with his best return coming during the 2011-12 campaign when his 29 goals helped the Basque outfit to the Copa del Rey and Europa League finals.

His prolific record at San Mames has also earned Llorente international recognition. He has scored seven goals in 21 appearances for Spain and was included in the squads that won the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championship.

Llorente has been used sparingly by Athletic coach Marcelo Bielsa since declaring his intention to leave, but his lack of activity has not dissuaded Juve, who currently lead the Serie A table by five points in their bid to retain the title.

Despite their dominance, Bianconeri boss Antonio Conte has struggled to forge an effective strikeforce from a pool of Mirko Vucinic, Fabio Quagliarella, Sebastian Giovinco and Alessandro Matri, with on-loan Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner failing to make an impact due to injury.

Thursday's announcement cools speculation that Juve were prepared to pay Athletic to release Llorente early, with both Didier Drogba of Shanghai Shenhua and Lyon's Lisandro Lopez being targeted as short-term solutions to the club's lack of firepower.

Buffon extends Juventus stay

Gianluigi Buffon is to remain with Juventus until at least the summer of 2015 after agreeing a two-year contract extension.

The 34-year-old has been with the Turin giants since 2011, standing by them through good times and bad.

He has become an iconic figure for the Bianconeri and is widely considered to be one the finest goalkeepers of the modern era.

Juve are understandably delighted to have seen him agree fresh terms, with a compromise having been reached after the Serie A outfit initially planned to put a three-year deal to the World Cup winner.

After putting pen to paper, on reduced terms, Buffon said: "I remember my first day and the fact that I was asking myself if I was up to the standard of a club like Juventus.

"My rapport with the fans has been important. I also enjoy a good relationship with the management and coaching staff.

Pogba inspires Juve

Written By Unknown on Sunday, January 20, 2013 | 12:13 AM

An inspirational Paul Pogba helped Juventus extend their lead at the top of Serie A to five points over Lazio and six over Napoli with two glorious goals in a 4-0 win over Udinese.

The French midfielder broke the deadlock with a stunning 35-yard effort before topping that with another goal from long range to make it two.

The floodgates opened, with Mirko Vucinic and Alessandro Matri also getting in on the act as Antonio Conte's men took full advantage of Lazio's draw at Palermo by returning to form in style at the Juventus Stadium. Juve had two chances to go ahead inside the opening 20 minutes with Daniele Padelli first turning Arturo Vidal's shot over the crossbar and then denying Emanuele Giaccherini with his legs.

Udinese then set about frustrating their hosts with a strong defensive display, which succeeded in keeping them at what appeared to be a safe distance from their goal. Pogba disproved that theory in the 41st minute, though, when he struck the ball on the volley from 35 yards out with the ball curling and dipping wickedly before grazing the underside of the crossbar on its way past Padelli.

It needed another moment of inspiration from the Frenchman to make it two in the 66th minute. With the ball at his feet this time - and a few yards further away from goal - the 19-year-old unleashed another unstoppable shot into the bottom left-hand corner.

Udinese's hopes were dashed and not even the introduction of Antonio Di Natale could help them. Juve started to turn their dominance into goals with Vucinic turning in at the near post to beat Padelli, who got a weak hand to the ball but could not prevent it from crossing the line in the 72nd minute.

Matri sealed the rout eight minutes later with Pogba getting the ball rolling, sending Vucinic clear and he played in Matri to thread his shot through Padelli's legs.

Lazio stumble to draw

Earlier, Juve's closest challengers Lazio stumbled to a 2-2 draw against Palermo. The Biancocelesti needed a late Hernanes penalty to take a point at the lowly side after being undone by two second-half goals in as many minutes.

Arevalo Rios cancelled out Sergio Floccari's early opener with 20 minutes to go and Palermo took a shock lead moments later through Paulo Dybala. Gian Piero Gasperini's strugglers failed to hold on, though, as Hernanes converted an 84th-minute spot-kick after Floccari was felled in the area by substitute Ezequiel Munoz.

Conte applauds rivalry jibe with Napoli

Written By Unknown on Saturday, January 12, 2013 | 7:15 AM

Juventus coach Antonio Conte feels Napoli should be proud that other clubs dislike them as it shows they are being taken seriously.

Bianconeri midfielder Claudio Marchisio revealed earlier this week that he does not like Napoli, but Conte says the Italy international's comments should be taken as a compliment.

"Marchisio was obviously referring to the sporting rivalry between Juventus and Napoli. It is only normal to have a certain rivalry between big clubs. They probably feel the same about us," he told a press conference.

"Napoli should be proud to have our antipathy rather than get upset about it as it means that they have joined the group of big clubs of Juventus, Inter and AC Milan that have certain feelings of rivalry."

Conte, 45, then looked ahead to this weekend's Serie A match against Parma, and insisted that the Bianconeri will do their utmost to return to winning ways in the league.

"We’re determined to get back on course in the championship following last weekend’s reverse. I’m sure we’ll see a good game, contested by two sides who will both be pushing for the win.

"Parma go into the encounter on the back of four straight successes and have yet to lose a game at home. We know it’s a difficult venue to go to and that they will want to put on a good show."

Juventus lead the Serie A with 44 points from 19 games.
